Blairs Tyre Service Peakhurst
Wet 6/10

A alternative to the RT215 it offers excelent wet and dry braking ability and a high grip level on the track.
The only down side is tyre life which wears out probally a little more then the RT215.

Federal 595RS
235/45/17-255/40/17
$250-315 each (Wheels says $150 each
Jax Tyres Southport
Wet (according to wheels) a Miserable 3/10
Dry 10/10 (took 1st in Dry cornering and dry braking in wheels tyre test)
It has the Compound of a Semi-Slick with solid sidewall to minimize flex under stress yet is categorized as a high performance road tyre. The groove pattern is enough to dissipate water at speed, however the compound is not very suitable for wet driving. This is definately a good Entry level Track tyre or a good performing street tyre, and alot of Targa cars are starting to use them as it is also a Cheap alternative.
Edited 31/07/06:- After some track sessions on these tyres, they are great up to a certain point, the compound is still slightly too hard, and at working temperature do not possess the grip of alot of other semi's. However still as a Targa type tyre this is definately a good choice, with enough grip and good tread wear.

Bridgestone Potenza S03
225/35R18 Front, 235/35R18 Rear
$280 fronts, $320 rears
Donellans Ferntree Gully Road
Wet 9/10
Dry 8/10
Tyres need a few K's to warm up, very high grip in the wet and last pretty well on the track, continue to grip all day long.
<edit>
Hankook K107 S1-Evo
245/35R19 Front, 275/30R19 Rear
~ $260 fronts, $290 rears
Donellans Ferntree Gully Road
Wet 7/10
Dry 7/10
These aren't bad for road use, compound is fairly sticky even when cold. Unfortunately they overheat very quickly and take ages to cool down. Once their hot, the grip threshold comes down significantly. Would recommend these for street-use only.

Wet ???
Dry 10/10
These are an awsome tyre with high levels of grip.
They are very progressive from cold to hot and are the best tyres i have used on the track yet. Obviously wear is a issue as with any R rated tyre but the trade off is the Grip. Did i mention the Grip?

Sorry but the RT215 is not the best track tyre, they don't like the heat we find that the grip deteriorate after 5 full laps. It may be an ok street tyre though.
Our vote would be Bridgetone Re-01R for street, unfortunately you can't get them here from your local Bridgestone dealer. We got some from Japan in 16inch and the tyre set us back $300/each but you have to pay the freight which cost about $400 extra. Compare this to the Advan Neova the tyre (cold) appear to be harder in compound(touching). However after about an hour of normal driving and 15mins of hard driving the tyre become almost like a semi slick (soft). We find that with the same corner(140km/hr) we down by roughly 15km/hr compared to Advan A048.

The cheap Falkens seem grippier than the usual cheap tyre.
Don't know the exact name.
3. Best Performance Road Tyre.
Advan Neova
Came on a set of rims from Japan.
Noticably better than S03's in the dry ! really.
Dry 9/10.
Very fast turn in and alot of grip, alot of safety margin for normal road use. I haven't pushed these in the wet, the S03's were good in the wet, well as good as a silvia in the wet will go anyway. Haven't used them on the track yet, I would hate to wear them out to quickly because they are great on the road. I think I'll put the cheaper tyres back on for track days and burn them up. S03's were good on the track as long as you held back a touch (0.5 sec), you would get minimal wear.
I heard that tyres were made of oil, not actually rubber ?

Have heard only great things about them. Mate uses them on his track car and they outlast, outgrip and are better priced than the Yokohama A048 and Bridgestone RE55.
I'm ordering a set in the next few weeks, and have a track day on 01/09/06 at Eastern Creek, so I will return after that for a full report!!!

I run RT215's on the front, im taking it to the track very soon (nervously), i have seen them wear on the track (brother took his car with them), wasnt pretty.
DRY:I agree that they are a great street tyre. Did 1 huge lock up approx 10M dont like wobbly steering wheels :-( put a decent flat spot on it, took bout 1000k's go away. Impressive stick in dry, brakes take a beating (fading) due to the amount of force before locking. I might chose different tyre next time coz ill be going to the track more.
WET:I was told they're crap in the wet, but i have had no issues at all, even in downpours where u can hardly see where ur going.
Edges wear easily if suspension isnt set up properly. But then again i do drive hard.
RT215's:$220 each fitted 205/50/16 Tempe Tyres* Couldn't find a better price.(Sydney)
Nenkang EX-500: $110 each fitted 225/50/16 Hard as nails, 5 months old no visible signs of wear, poor in the wet, poor in the dry....poor poor poor, EXCELLENT DRIFT TYRE!!!
*Tempe Tyres: Quote 'Tempe Tyres had it's humble beginnigs in 1990 when the old was first established in 1990. With years of wheel and tyre experience the Tempe Tyres Team are known for quality, service and price.'
No offence but the wheel balance they did was less than satisfactory, i took it back and they 'redid them' with no improvement. As for the wheel allignment im suprised he didnt just leave it the way he test drove it before he changed it, hasnt been the same since. (He also only changed one side so my steering wheel wasnt even straight anymore=not professional, you get what u pay for.)
Took it to Blair's Tyres @ Peakhurst (Syd), fixed my wheel balance even with a flat spot on it :-P

I just picked up some RE01s from a local guy here for 300 bucks for the pair and they are almost brand new!
I was just lucky I guess, and your right they seem very hard to touch when they are cold, ill take them for a bit of a spirited drive this weekend and see how they go on the twisty stuff...

im after 275/35/18 or 285/35/18 depending on price
I called up a michelin tyre place once and they quoted me for the new pilot sports (there's 2 versions I believe):
$550 215/45R17
$507 235/40R17
Should be able to get them cheaper elsewhere.

Performance:
These things are stickyer than my Perelli P7's on a dry road.
They'll still light up around corners if you get over-confident,
but they're very co-operative when you decide bring it back.
As for wet weather performance, what can I say? If you're
thinking about taking these things out in the rain, DON'T!
Sitting in 3rd, doing 3,000prm. Pressed my foot to the floor.
Everything went fine till I hit 4,000rpm. They just started to
spin, and they wouldn't stop. It had been a long time since
our last rain, but even still. These things hate the wet.
Be carefull.

$160 for 205/55/16's
Eagle Tyres - Granville Sydney
They have great grip in wet and very good grip in the dry.
I have also used RE01's Bridgestone.
They are superior compared to the dunlop's (less sidewall flex) from what i can tell.

Look past these these because they never provide enough confidence on a sharp turn. Quite unpredicatable.
Dry: 7/10
Wet: 1/10
Tyres came on the car when I bought it, but after a few hard twists and turns, they were shredded.
So whats the conclusion? What rubber should I get for the road?

235/40 18 front
255/35 18 rear
Wet: 10/10 definately the best in the wet.
Dry: 8/10 Good in the dry but as said above the corner stability is a bit sus.
One thing i will warn with the GSD3 is the wearing factor, i got 10,000km`s max out of my rears and thats with NO drifting or track work at all, just a lot of range work. At $400+ each for the rear this isnt good value for money.
Have some Potenza S03`s sitting here to go on next, shall wait to see if they improve the cornering.

However they have NEVER been to a track, and probably would be unsuited.
I am running around 38 at the rear and 36 on the fronts.
In the wet 10/10
In the dry I would say around 7.5 to 8/10, but road driving only
I'm running 225/50R16's on stock S-15 rims
Cheers

First full set all made in germany - great in wet, fairly good in the dry for something that isn't a semi slick
Bought two more rears because of my heavy right foot and think they were made in Thailand. Car behaved quite different. Felt vervous in long sweeping corners. Almost like the rear suspension was moving sideways in a rubberish way. Got alignment done again and still seemed like an issue. Started wondering if the side walls were flexing a fair amount.
Can't remember where I read it but the ones made in Thailand are a slightly different compound and to me seemed like the sidewalls were flexing a fair bit. When they were all german made ones the car seemed relaxed around corners.
There are also some that are made here whcih I heard someone say they are worse. ZExplains why some give them great reviews and others say they feel nervous.
Bought Falken RT215's and got another alignment. The car felt better than it ever had been. Much more turn in which I assume is the stiffer sidewalls. Extra grip helped corner speed obviously.
All tyres had correct pressures as well.
All the above tyres were used with the same setup.
I think the earlier GSD3's were mostly made in germany but now we recieve mostly Thialand ones now as it is closer. I would buy them again if I was guaranteed german made ones but none of the places I spoke to before I got the RT215's would get the german made ones brought in for me.
