Hi my brother would like to know wat mods you would need to do to a car in order to turn it into a rally car mainly for off-road use but also for road use. The cars we have in mind are a 1989 BWM 320i, or 1985 Toyota AE86, or 180sx running a CA18DE, OR SR20DE.

Which one would u select or which car would u recommend and how much money is he looking at for modifying it to become a rally car AND wat mods????

thnx

One thing to look at is not only the power but the traction and suspension. there is no point racing a boosted car with a shite load of power when you cant keep the wheels gripping the road. The bmw will have power and tourqe from low down in the revs where as the 180 will loose traction on the gravel as soon as it hits boost.

I have an r31 rb20det which im doing for rally. i got that problem.

so out of the BMW and the AE86 which one would u select???
And also how much $$$ are we looking at to purchase rally style suspension, brakes, tyres etc???

An r31 would make a monster rally car, just make it AWD and u'll b tearing the dirt track.

You wouldn't have much trouble getting traction with a DE.

The AE86's are too expensive to buy in a decent state if you after bang for bucks.
I'm not sure about availability of rally parts for any of the cars but I would say its easier to get parts for the 180sx than the BMW

What motor are you running in the ae86?

I havnt started racing the r31 as yet. ive been slowly modding it up. ive spent about 8k so far on the motor and turbo setup. still need to spend some money on a shorter box. Havnt done anything with the suspension as yet. Im waitin on a quote for a 35mm x 3mm cage but that coulb be anything over a grand.

The AE86 will be running a 4GAZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BWM will be running a 2ltr 4cyl Beema engine, or might put in a CA18DET to spice things up.

I would expect it would be allot easier to find mods and parts for the Ae86.

Have you thought about getting an uncomplied race/rally import?

You may find it much cheaper rather that getting a complied shell and stripping it, you probably would get one with decent parts too.

before you spend any coin get yourself a copy of a cams manual. i think you will find a lot of your options won't comply with rules and therefore you won't be able to use them. forget about horsepower and spend your money on brakes and suspension, you'll be better off in the long run. ae86's make great rally cars and so do bmw's (some great footage on youtube) N/A 180's are becoming popular as well. no matter what you decide on to get it logbook stage you'll be looking at around $20,000 minimum!
